A deep-dive technical assessment of engineering demands for PTU deployment in Arctic, Maritime, and Offshore sectors.
Deploying surveillance cameras, thermal imagers, LiDAR sensors, and searchlights along Norway’s vast, fragmented coastline of over 100,000 kilometers demands a radical rethink of mechanical engineering tolerances. Unlike moderate climates, positioning hardware installed in Norwegian maritime or arctic regions—such as Svalbard, the North Sea, or coastal fjords like Geirangerfjord—must withstand combinations of heavy salt-spray corrosion (C5-M rating), sub-zero icing conditions down to -40°C, and structural shock from violent gale-force winds.
Under these conditions, standard pan-tilt units fail rapidly due to frozen gearboxes, condensation ingress, or motor stall caused by high ice-loading torque. To overcome these environmental stress factors, pan-tilt positioners must incorporate internal heating systems (PTC heaters), custom low-temperature sealings (fluorosilicone seals), and robust worm-gear drive designs capable of overcoming rotational resistance without stripping gears.
The positioning head industry is undergoing a paradigm shift. Historically, standard worm-gear drives provided self-locking capabilities but suffered from speed limitations and mechanical backlash over years of continuous operations. For modern automated tracking systems—such as counter-UAS (Unmanned Aerial Systems) or border radar alignment in Norway—high speed and zero-backlash precision are non-negotiable.
Our current generation of positioners utilizes high-precision stepper motors and worm-gear arrangements, delivering speed options up to 100°/second. Our future technical roadmap features Brushless DC (BLDC) direct-drive motors equipped with optical absolute encoders, allowing for angular positioning accuracies down to ±0.01°. By removing gear meshes entirely, direct-drive eliminates wear-and-tear and maintains long-term reliability without maintenance interventions, a crucial factor for hard-to-access remote weather stations in the Norwegian mountains.
Today's security and observation infrastructure does not rely on visual light alone. Modern installations combine long-range cooled thermal imaging cameras, visible cameras with 1000mm+ telephoto lenses, marine radars, and laser rangefinders onto a single pan-tilt unit (PTU) platform. This requires dual-arm or top-load configurations that support heavy off-center loads while maintaining precise dynamic control.
Through robust payload support ranging from 3.5kg up to 120kg, our PTUs serve as the mechanical backbone of automated target tracking software, enabling search-and-rescue (SAR) operators and coastguard personnel in Bergen, Oslo, and Tromsø to automatically lock onto vessels and navigate through heavy mist, rain, or total winter darkness.
